It has been almost 10 years since Professor Gu Zheng first introduced the term “Shi Sha Shin” (private photography) in his essay “Discussing about China’s PrivatePhotography”. Today, “Shi Sha Shin” has become an important phenomenon in the landscape of Chinese contemporary photography, with more and more young photographers setting their lens on private life and secretive moments which are intimately associated with the “self”. By taking photography as an approach, this is an autonomous watching process that has, to certain extent, rebelled against the grandiose narratives and the traditions of social value judgements (Gu Zheng).
However, if looking at those “selves” depicted in private photographs during the last 10 years, we can see most of them present an emotional personal image and an enclosed secret life. But emotions originate from the subjects’ perceptions and feedbacks toward themselves as well as the surrounding worlds, and the“self”is never merely a topic about one individual. From the theme of life struggles revealed in the works of Nobuyoshi Araki and Nan Goldin, to the social metaphors manifested in Larry Sultan’s family pictures, like all the other modes of photography, “Shi Sha Shin” is also brimming with rich connotations and reading possibilities. Because people’s creative practice about “Shi Sha Shin” is quite stereotypical and this concept is also widely abused, Lin Ye initiated a series of translation works of relevant essays, articles, and interviews last year, with an effort to revisit and re-clarify this concept; while he simultaneously contributed to the latest exhibition of Ray Art Center “Me and Me”, which showcases a series photographs taken by ChenWenjun and Jiang Yanmei in their daily life. These photos, including selfies andmutually taken pictures, are the two artists’ exploration about themselves, theirrelationship, and even photographyitself in the past eight years.
The upcoming RayChat Vis-à-vis event invites Professor Gu Zheng, the participating artists and the curator of our current exhibition to give an in-depth dialogue on this topic. To start with the works of Chen Wenjun and Jiang Yanmei as well as some other cases of “private photography” home and abroad, this discussion will explore the relationship between private images and self-recognition, seeking for more possibilities of “Shi Sha Shin” in artistic creation and the reading of it.We also hope that this event would become an inspiring reference for domestic photographers.
